Democratic Republic of Congo

LIAM partners with Doctor Paul M. & his wife Jennifer in the DR Congo. Dr. Paul gave up the prospect of a secure hospital job to work in the epicenter of rebel territory. He serves in a region so volatile few doctors dare to go there. Even though militias often raided his clinic and destroyed medical supplies, he resolved to continue caring for the suffering. In addition to Dr. Paul's medical work, he & Jennifer coordinate relief programs to support suffering families & children in the war-zone.

Butembo, Congo is a region destabilized by 100+ active rebel militias. Thousands of families have been forced to run for their lives and struggle to survive amidst harsh conditions: little access to food or clean water, and many diseases caused by poor sanitation. Dr. Paul and his team support these vulnerable refugees through medical care, food rations, housing, and water & sanitation initiatives.

In 2021 violence further escalated due to the ADF: an Islamic terrorist group with ties to ISIS. The ADF’s brutal attacks on civilian villages have claimed thousands of lives. Caring for massacre survivors has become one of LIAM Global’s primary initiatives in Butembo.

Since June of 2022, Congo has been further destabilized by a new outbreak of war in North Kivu province against an armed group called the M23 . The M23 war has displaced over 500,000 people; causing a huge humanitarian crisis in the region.

  • Frontlines Care - War Victims

Emergency relief (food, clothes, shelter) and psychological support for massacre survivors. Brutal rebel attacks against civilians (especially Christians) in the region have displaced thousands.

  • Medical Ministry

Dr. Paul is a trained surgeon. He leads a team that provides urgent medical care for the war-afflicted communities around Butembo.

  • Orphan Homes

Caring for children who’ve lost both parents to war, terrorist attacks , or disease. These little ones are placed in loving homes and receive monthly support & scholarships to attend school.

  • Water & Sanitation

Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) initiatives help improve clean water access and prevent spread of diseases like Typhoid.

  • Agriculture

Food provided for malnourished children and families through small farms & gardens. The community also receives training in more effective farming techniques.

  • Feeding Programs

Weekly/monthly feeding programs to support severely malnourished children, along with nutritional training for parents.

  • Care for Ebola Survivors

August 2018 - June 2020 Congo suffered an Ebola outbreak that killed thousands. Survivors were supported with resources to re-build their lives & livelihoods.
