Kenya

In Laikipia County, Kenya we partner with Pastor Isaac & Esther Wairangu who lead Love In Action Missions: Kenya, which seeks to transform a struggling settlement for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) into a thriving community. During a 40 day fast, Isaac felt God's call to quit his stable job as an orphanage director and serve the refugees full-time. What began as humble ministry going door-to-door preaching the gospel has flourished into community-wide transformation by the grace of God.

Located in semi-arid Central Kenya, the IDP settlement known as “Shalom Camp” is home to 4,000 families who survived ethnic cleansing attempts in 2008. Many had lost loved ones through brutal killings or starvation and disease. These survivors struggle to make ends meet in the harsh desert conditions where water, shelter and food are not easily accessible.

Solutions pioneered in agriculture and education are slowly transforming Shalom camp into a viable place to live. Water collection systems provide crucial irrigation; and families taught to cultivate 'sack gardens' from scratch have been able to harvest their own food. In addition, we are building schools and supporting teachers, so that young refugee children have the opportunity to attend school. Youth are sponsored to attend high school and local universities through educational scholarships.

“In this life we come with nothing, and go with nothing. So it’s best to spend what we have on loving people.”
